Minimum Standards
The continuance requirements represent the minimum standards for a student to continue as a business major. A student is limited to 24 credit hours of business courses unless he or she is a College of Business major and has satisfied the minimum continuance requirements listed below:
- Complete, with a minimum grade of "C" or better, the following tool courses: ACC 131, ACC 132; BUS 100; ECO 105; MQM 100 (or general education equivalent: ECO/GEO/POS/PSY 138); Math 121 or Math 145. (NOTE: BTE majors take MQM 140 and MAT 120 or MAT 121 or MAT 144 or MAT 145)
- Prove computer competency (spreadsheet usage, presentation software, and web page construction) through completion of the following: (ACC 167 & 168; ACC 166 or ITK 150; IAI BUS 902); or by passing college-administered competency exams (ACC 189.67 and 189.68).
Please note: Transfer students should complete this requirement prior to enrolling at Illinois State University - course options at the community college include completing equivalents of any of the following courses: ACC 166, ITK150, or an IAI BUS 902 equivalent.
- Earn an overall Illinois State University GPA of 2.50 or higher on at least 12 completed hours.
- PLEASE NOTE: Accountancy majors must also complete ACC 230 and 231 with a minimum of a "C" in each and a 2.5 GPA in these 2 courses (prerequisites for ACC 230 and 231 include a minimum B/C combination in ACC 131 and 132).
Verification of Standards for Progress in the Major
Students who have met all College of Business continuance requirements have a special coding that allows them to enroll in upper-level business classes that may exceed 24 business hours. The records of business students who have not yet received the advanced continuance coding will be assessed prior to each registration period and students will be notified of their status. This assessment will electronically scan all College of Business majors who have earned at least 43 semester hours but have not yet been coded as a continuing major. Students DO NOT need to file an application.
- Post Grade Review Form (pdf) - Do not use this form unless you have met all of the "Standards for Progress in the Major." This form is to be used by non-business majors applying for a change to an undergraduate business major at the end of the spring 2008 semester. Forms will be accepted from May 14- June 2 if the transcripts have been articulated or we have the official transcript. We will not accept unofficial transcripts. Students may also turn their forms in during final exam week prior to leaving campus for summer break.
Note:
Through a competitive and selective process, students are evaluated for progress in their major from a pool of qualified applicants on the basis of individual qualifications. The standards for progress represent the minimum standards for a student to continue as a business major. Thus, some students who satisfy the minimum standards may not be allowed to continue as a business major. The college reserves the right to maintain a balanced enrollment; the number of students who continue in the program may vary from year to year depending on program capacity and the qualifications of students in the pool.
