The organizational leadership sequence helps students develop those skills and aptitudes necessary for success and leadership positions in business and not-for-profit organizations in the 21st century.
The development of one's skills in working with people and groups as well as making decisions is at the focus of this program of study, which makes it applicable to a wide or general range of companies and managers.
Organizational leadership prepares students for a wide range of jobs because managers in all organizations work with people and teams, make decisions, and are constantly dealing with changes affecting their work. Manufacturing, insurance, transportation, retailing, food processing, and computer information businesses have all hired our graduates. So have hospitals, government agencies, and other not-for-profit organizations. Graduates generally enter a management-training program with their employer to become familiar with company policies and industry dynamics.
Organizational leadership concentrates on the knowledge and skill development to become an effective manager. Coursework provides theoretical, experiential and practical knowledge and skills relative to problem solving, decision making, behavior of people and groups in organizations, teamwork, managerial philosophy and style, organizational design, culture, change and other related topics.
The Organizational Leadership Sequence is administered by the Department of Management and Quantitative Methods. Faculty assigned to this sequence combine strong academic backgrounds with extensive managerial and/or consulting experience in large, complex organizations.
Courses offered by these faculty are participative and experiential. The Illinois State University Organizational Leadership sequence offers a number of specialized courses to prepare students for entry level managerial and supervisory positions in a variety of fields and to move toward upper level managerial assignments with broad, complex responsibilities.
During the fall, spring, or summer semesters, majors of this program may participate in the departmental internship program. As an intern, students earn academic credit while working in organizations in a variety of assignments and projects. These internships allow students to make direct connections between their academic work and practical management experiences.
Students are encouraged to get involved by becoming a member of a professional fraternity, honorary organization, or club. A student's college experience is enhanced greatly by participation in these student clubs and organizations through field trips, industry speakers, charitable works, and social activities. The Organizational Leadership Club is available to provide members with opportunities to further expand their understanding of leadership in contemporary organizations.
