Business Administration Major

Students seeking a general background in business find the business administration major an excellent choice. They receive significant depth in developing their analytical and behavioral skills to achieve success in a wide range of careers. Leaders in business must have the ability to understand and to adapt, critical attributes being fostered through the business administration program.

Careers

Career paths vary with the individual and his or her vision of the future. Graduates with a business administration degree are employed in a wide variety of organizations, including government, military, educational, healthcare, legal, agribusiness, as well as in business. A recent survey showed graduates employed in banking, investments, human resources, management, insurance, sales, retailing, systems analysis, law, and other occupations. Several are executives in their own businesses. Other students see the major as the background they want prior to attending law school or enrolling in graduate work.

Curriculum

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the program, the courses are taught by faculty members from all departments in the College of Business. Courses are designed not only to help students learn subject matter, but also to meet the broader objectives of the business administration program: helping students develop their communication, team orientation, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Critical thinking and problem solving skills used in decision making are enhanced through advanced courses required in business administration. While some flexibility is provided, the emphasis on rigor and consistency is achieved through the following required courses:

  • Cost accounting
  • Electronic business management
  • Investments
  • Marketing Research
  • Organizational behavior
  • Quality management

Students take an additional international business related elective and one approved business elective of their choice.

Minor

A minor in business administration is available to students pursuing a non-business major. This minor provides an overview of the various functional areas in business.

Internships

During the fall, spring, or summer semesters, majors of this program may participate in the departmental internship program. As interns, students earn academic credit while making direct connections between their academic work and practical business experience.

Business Administration Association

Business administration students may also participate in the Business Administration Association or in any of the College of Business professional fraternities or honorary organizations. A student’s college experience is enhanced greatly by participation in these student clubs and organizations through field trips, industry speakers, charitable works, and social activities.
