Biography
Mike Williams joined the Department of Marketing in 1991 and brings with him over 25 years of experience in the real world of marketing and management. He continues to be active as a business consultant and serves as board member for organizations such as National Sales Center Alliance, Fisher Institute for Professional Selling, National Conference in Sales Management, and Vector Marketing. In addition to being co-editor for a Journal of Business Research special issue, he has been active on the Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management editorial board for nine years, receiving the 1998 Award for Excellence in Reviewing from that publication. In 1999, Mike was invited to lecture in a seminar at Oxford.
Current Teaching Interests: Marketing Management, Sales & Relationship Marketing, Sales Management.
Current Research Interests: Dr. Williams' research interests are in the areas of customer-orientation, salesperson performance, and organizational culture. He has co-authored six textbooks and published in numerous national and international journals and conference proceedings including: the Quality Management Journal; International Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management; Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management; Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing; Journal of Engineering Education , and the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice.
Consulting and Work Experience: Previous to his career in academe, Mike accumulated an extensive background in marketing management, market research, and sales. As a business consultant, he works with clients ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 organizations. Mike is also a Research Associate with the Competitive Intelligence and Strategy Center and the Market-Driven Quality Group where he was one of three principle investigators awarded a three year National Science Foundation Grant. In 1993, he was one of only five scholars selected to consult with IBM-Canada on marketing strategy and corporate revitalization through the University of Toronto . Most recently, Mike was one of three principal researchers designing, conducting, and publishing the Quality Scorecard -- an international, multi-year study of customer satisfaction for the North American, commercial property and casualty insurance industry.
Professional Affiliations, Honors, and Awards: Mike is active in American Marketing Association, the Academy of Marketing Science , and the National Conference in Sales Management. He has also been recognized and granted membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, Alpha Mu Alpha, and Phi Kappa Phi marketing and business honor societies. In 1990, he represented Oklahoma State University at the AMA Doctorial Consortium and represented Illinois State University at the 1992 and 1999 AMA Faculty Consortiums.
His research has been awarded numerous honors, including recognition in the distinguished Marketing Science Institute's Alden G. Clayton Competition, four Outstanding Research Manuscript Awards, Illinois State University 's Research Initiative Award, College of Business Outstanding Researcher , Research Fellow of the Richard D. Irwin Foundation, and Who's Who in America , Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Old Republic Research Scholar. Mike's manuscript, "The Influence of Salesperson's Customer Orientation on Buyer-Seller Relationship Development," received the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing's Best Manuscript for the Year 1998 Award. He has also received honors for accomplishments in university and corporate education including College of Business Teaching Award , Illinois State University Teaching Initiative Award, the Outstanding MBA Faculty Award, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Emerging Leaders in America , and the AACSB's Leadership in Innovative Business Education Award.
