The entrepreneurship and small business management sequence offers a unique learning experience to students who aspire to start businesses or obtain employment in growth-oriented small businesses.

The program will help students identify career options in small business, expand their knowledge of entrepreneurship, and develop venture management skills and techniques.

Coursework provides theoretical, experiential, and practical information about starting, operating, and managing small firms and the very important role they play in today’s society. Faculty participating in this sequence combine strong academic backgrounds with extensive consulting experience in entrepreneurship and small business management. The fundamental philosophy of those teaching in this area is that students learn best through application. Therefore, the classes are project-oriented and interactive with real companies.

In addition to learning the fundamentals of core business disciplines such as finance, accounting, marketing and management, students will take many specialized courses.

Introduction to Small Business

This course sent the stage for every student's journey through the entrepreneurship concentration. In it, students examine the growing impact of small business in the economy, identify the issues that make running a small business different from running a large one, and interact with local small business owners to gain exposure to a variety of small business models.

Entrepreneurship I

In this skill-building course, students not only run a simulated coffee shop, but also use their own money to open a real business. Their goal is to get a substantial return on investments in just eight weeks.

Entrepreneurship II

Entrepreneurship II provides rigorous training in business plan writing. Students work in teams to develop a complete plan for an actual business idea. Issues of skill-balancing and developing good team dynamics are addressed to complement work on the plan itself.

Small Business Field Studies

By the time students take this course, they are ready to put their knowledge to the test. With the guidance of the course instructor, each team must develop an intervention designed to address issues experienced by a local small business.
