Jim Cox joined the faculty at Illinois State University as an Assistant Professor of Marketing in August 1983. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of Marketing (1979-1983) at Virginia Tech, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in logistics, marketing research, forecasting, and marketing management.
Current Teaching Interests: Marketing Research, Forecasting, Logistics, Strategic Marketing.
Current Research Interests: Dr. Cox is the co-author of a book Sales Forecasting: A Survey of Recent Developments, published by the Marketing Science Institute. He has published articles in Industrial Marketing Management, the International Journal of Forecasting, the Journal of Forecasting, the Journal of Business Logistics, the Journal of Marketing Education, the Journal of Economic Education, the Journal of Business Ethics, Principles of Forecasting, the Marketing Educator, and the Marketing News. Additionally, he has published papers in the Proceedings of the AMA Educators' Conference and the Proceedings of the National Council of Physical Distribution Management. Projects in progress include inquiry into various applications of forecasting methods; and empirical assessment of alternative teaching methodologies.
Consulting and Work Experience: Professor Cox has served as a consultant to several companies, specializing in the areas of forecasting and marketing research; he's also conducted seminars on these topics.
Professional Affiliations, Honors, and Awards: Memberships have included the American Marketing Association (AMA), the Central Illinois Chapter of AMA, and the International Institute of Forecasters. In 1979, while a doctoral student at the University of Illinois, the faculty selected Professor Cox to attend the AMA Doctoral Consortium (held that year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) as well as the Indiana University Albert Haring Symposium for Doctoral Research in Marketing. While at Virginia Tech, Dr. Cox received two teaching excellence awards; and since his coming to ISU, he has been the recipient of several departmental awards (Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding Researcher, Outstanding Service, and Outstanding Faculty Member). Also, Professor Cox has been honored with prestigious College of Business awards (Outstanding Researcher, Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Service). He has also received the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, one of the University's most prestigious teaching awards. Dr. Cox served as Faculty Advisor for the ISU Collegiate Chapter of the AMA from Fall 1983 through Spring 1991 and again from Spring 1999 to present. He has received the coveted H.G. Wales Faculty Advisor of the Year Award from the international headquarters of AMA three times - initially in 1986, again in 1988, and most recently in 1991. Under his guidance, the ISU collegiate chapter received the AMA Outstanding Midwestern Collegiate Chapter Award for 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87 and 1988-89, and the prestigious AMA International Collegiate Chapter of the Year Award for 1984-85 and again 1986-87. In 2001, again under Dr. Cox's guidance, ISU-AMA received the Student AMA Chapter of the Year Award at the St. Louis AMA Conference. Professor Cox has served as V.P.-Collegiate Relations for the Central Illinois Professional AMA Chapter. He also continues to serve on the Editorial Review Board for the Review of Business .
