The International Business Institute, established in 2008, builds on a long tradition of international business education at Illinois State University. The first international business graduate completed a contract major in 1981. The first summer study abroad program started with ESSCA in Angers, France, in 1983.
The International Business Major was formalized in 1984. It is the only international business program at a public university in Illinois. The program is accredited by the Consortium of Undergraduate International Business Education - CUIBE

If you are a student, you can explore opportunities for study abroad. As a parent, you will be surprised about the many opportunities your son and daughter will have to become a global citizen. As a business person, you will be impressed with the educational and global background our graduates bring to their careers.
The International Business Institute (IBI) strives to internationalize our students, faculty, curriculum, and research in response to the growing globalization of business. Through a unique network of outreach and application programs, the IBI works with businesses to strengthen their export potential. As an Institute at a public university, the IBI is dedicated to serving the needs and developing the full potential of Illinois businesses.
International Business majors can take advantage of international internships. They can choose from among 6 study abroad programs during the summer and 8 during the regular semester. Our International Business alumni are working around the globe and are a rich source for our faculty and students.
The IBI fosters the development of leadership skills through the International Business Institute Club and special international programs and events.
The IBI manages the international faculty exchange programs with partner institutions in five countries. Their research has been published in international journals, and many are active in consulting and training for international companies.
The IBI manages an active business outreach program including the Export Program which is the only program of this kind in the country. The Export Project, started in 2005, brings together academia and small businesses. Student teams from across campus work with small and medium-sized businesses to help them develop their export potential. Students study a participating business and identify a target country for exporting the business’ product in the spring semester; they then travel to the target country in June. At the end they deliver a detailed marketing plan to the company. Businesses receive a valuable service, and the students develop extensive leadership skills through team work and hands-on projects.
