FIL 240 Business Finance and FIL 370 Educational Investment Fund. FIL 240 introduced me to financial concepts I could apply to real-world situations, and it set a wonderful foundation for the upper level finance classes. EIF allowed me to get real experience with all facets of equity portfolio management. It was truly an experience that will last a lifetime.
Financial Management Association. The speakers were very informative, and usually were open to questions and even one-to-one talks after the meetings. We took finance field trips to ADM, Anheuser-Busch, the Fed and Board of Trade in Chicago, and State Farm's Investments Department. These experiences helped me build relationships with individuals both inside and outside of FMA. They were very educational, but at the same time a lot of fun. Some of my fellow FMA members are still my close friends almost ten years after graduation.
My job requires interaction with financial advisors at securities firms and banks across the US who sell Nuveen financial products. The diversified curriculum Illinois State incorporates into the Finance program helps me perform my responsibilities in many ways. I use not only all the knowledge gained in my various ISU finance classes, but also accounting, marketing, information technology, and even communications.
I came to ISU as a transfer student, with a family, after working as a printer for twenty years and becoming interested in finance by investing my retirement money. I was apprehensive about undertaking such a big career change, but the program's state-of-the-art curriculum prepared me well for a finance career, and its growing alumni network helped me get established in my job and is still valuable. The faculty and advisors fully addressed my concerns and supported my commitment to successfully completing the program. My personal and career development over the last decade all links back to the groundwork set at ISU.
