The insurance major at Illinois State University is a premier, nationally-known curriculum that prepares students for careers in insurance and risk management. Risk Management Magazine, published by the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), has recognized Illinois State University as a top school in the nation for the number of graduates in insurance and risk management programs. With over 100 insurance students receiving degrees in the 2010-2011 academic year, Illinois State is in the top three nationally, along with the University of Georgia and Temple University.
The major was created in 1994 as part of the continuing cooperation between the University and the insurance industry. The major offers two sequences, the general insurance sequence or the sequence in insurance and business information systems (BIS). A double major in finance and insurance is currently popular with about 50% of all insurance majors also pursuing a finance major. For all majors, including non-business majors, an insurance minor (pdf) is available. The insurance program emphasizes effective teaching and student involvement in learning.
The College of Business at Illinois State is also the home of the Center for Insurance and Financial Services (Katie School), which sponsors insurance research, speakers, panels, not-for-credit short courses, and insurance industry management education. The Center and the Department of Finance, Insurance and Law work together to help students benefit from industry professionals and leaders the Center brings to campus.
The general insurance sequence provides an in-depth study of insurance and financial services combined with the general business core curriculum.
The business information systems sequence enables students to combine a general insurance background with skills in computer programming, systems analysis, and systems design.
