The Department offers course work in the areas of finance, insurance, and business law. Programs of study available through the department are the major in finance, the major in insurance, and the minor in insurance. While there is not a program of study in law, knowledge of legal and ethical issues that affect organizations is important to all fields of study within the College of Business, and the business law faculty serves the college and the university with a range of general and specialized law courses.
Established in 1991, the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services provides unique programs and educational services for the insurance industry, insurance educators, and insurance consumers through seminars, instruction, research services, student scholarships, and internships. The Educational Investment Fund (EIF) is a real-money, student-run investment portfolio. Students in their senior year are selected on the basis of merit. A board of directors consisting of industry professionals meets regularly with the students and provides individual mentorship. Fund proceeds are used for scholarships, awards, and other departmental and student needs. The Financial Markets Lab in the College of Business Building is the home for EIF. The room is equipped with state-of-the art technology and the latest in financial software.
Law schools offer only post-graduate courses of study. Large numbers of law programs exist throughout the United States. Illinois State University does not maintain a law school, but a Pre-Law Advisement Center was formed in fall 2003 by Dr. Robert Bradley, associate professor of Politics & Government to provide Illinois State students interested in attending law school with a central location to access information relating to legal education.
