Aysen Bakir (MKT)
Dr. Aysen Bakir attended a Visiting Professor Program at Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency for two weeks in July. She was one of the 17 participants selected for this national program by Advertising Education Foundation. Ogilvy has helped to build some of the most recognizable brands in the world: American Express, Sears, Ford, Shell, Barbie, Dove, Maxwell House, IBM, Kodak among them. Given that Dr. Bakir’s research focuses on issues related to children’s advertising, she spent most of her time with the group responsible for the Mattel account. Ogilvy has had the Mattel account for more than four decades.
During her visit, Aysen met with various executives and staff members, including account executives, creative directors, legal/compliance officers, and producers. This program offered an opportunity to observe how the various principles of advertising that are taught in the classroom are implemented in practice. Dr. Bakir’s visit provided great classroom material and inspired more research ideas. While at Ogilvy Dr. Bakir presented one of her research projects on children’s response to gender-typed advertising at Ogilvy Los Angeles. Her presentation was very well received.
Aysen Bakir also co-authored an article entitled “How Are Children’s Attitudes Toward Ads and Brands Affected by Gender-Related Content in Advertising” which will appear in the Journal of Advertising.

Linda Miles & Joe Trefzger (FIL)
A “Viewpoints” piece by Finance professors Linda Miles and Joe Trefzger appeared in the August 15, 2008 issue of American Banker, a prominent newspaper produced each business day for the banking industry. The article, “While They’re At It, Can They Fix Deposit Insurance?” discusses inefficiencies imposed on both savers and banks by a deposit insurance system that limits coverage for money held at one bank but allows essentially unlimited coverage system-wide.
Among the convoluted provisions the authors explain are the expansion of coverage as people open joint accounts, paired with the cumbersome contraction of coverage that arises as banks merge. They propose raising the limit immediately to $500,000 per person per bank, as with the current standard for insuring accounts with securities brokers, and working toward unlimited coverage. They express the hope that as the federal government pursues its major overhaul of financial institution regulation this year, it might address these longstanding problems afflicting the plans that guarantee Americans’ bank balances.
