  • Joe SolbergJoe Solberg (FIL) was profiled in Business Week Magazine as a favorite professor. The full article is available at: Putting Students Center Stage
  • Jim Jawahar, interim chair of Management and Quantitative Methods, was recently chosen as an editor of Career Development International (CDI), an international, inter-disciplinary journal devoted to careers and human resource management. Career Development International publishes articles dealing with psychological and developmental aspects of individual careers, career interventions, government policy and practices, human resource planning and recruitment, international themes and issues, organizational strategies and systems, performance management and work and occupational contexts. Career Development International is published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited and is included in many indexing and abstracting services including PsycINFO and Scopus.   • Illinois Small Business Development Center Director, Elizabeth Binning, was recently nominated for the 2007 YWCA Women of Distinction and 2007 Athena Award. Binning has also recently received the designation of Certified Business Specialist by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
  • “Loss Modeling using Spreadsheet-Based Simulation” by Domingo Joaquin (FIL) appeared in the fall 2007 issue of Risk Management and Insurance Review. The paper was presented at the 2nd Annual North America Conference of Practitioners applying @Risk Simulation in industry and the academe held in Miami Beach in October. The event attracted practitioners, academics, and consultants from across North America, as well as from Australia, France, Uruguay, Finland, and Russia. Companies represented included: Kennedy Space Center, JP Morgan Chase Bank, Prometheus Energy, Eastman Chemical, National Defense Canada, Target Corporation, Fluor Canada Ltd, AON, Boeing, TIAA-CREF, Walt Disney Company, Quality Magazine, and many more.
    • Joaquin’s paper has also attracted the attention of The Micro Insurance Academy in India, which has requested Joaquin’s assistance in simulation modeling. The Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) is a Delhi-based charitable trust dedicated to evidence-based studies, training and advisory services for micro-insurance units serving the poor. Community-based micro-insurance units seek to promote the extension of insurance coverage among the uninsured poor by customizing their insurance to the risks and conditions they face, at affordable premiums, through a process that they trust.   • S. J. Chang, Associate Dean for MBA and Undergraduate Programs, was an invited speaker for Senior Professionals of Illinois State University and the Central Illinois Chapter of the Organization for Chinese-Americans. Chang spoke about inter-cultural perspectives on history, culture, and business between the East and the West.
  • Jay Rich (ACC) was part of a select group of accounting faculty from around the US asked to teach accounting topics to KPMG employees as part of their multi-day new employee training program. Rich will participate in the company’s January training sessions as well.
  • Richard MacMinn (FIL) edited a special issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Risk and Insurance on longevity risk. Earlier this fall he received the ARIA Outstanding Achievement Award from the American Risk and Insurance Association. The award was given for MacMinn’s furthering the science of risk management through the promotion of education, research and communication during his nine-year tenure as editor of the Journal of Risk and Insurance.
  • Massoud Hemmasi (MQM) and MBA student Carol Csanda, Director of Knowledge Management (Strategic Resources area) at State Farm, presented a paper “Determinants of Effectiveness of Communities of Practice” at the ATINER 5th International Conference on Management, in Athens, Greece. The paper is now under review for publication in a refereed management journal.
  • Katrin Varner (FIL) and Carson Varner (FIL) have teamed for two recent presentations:

  • Doug Micklich (MQM) has been elected Chapter Chair of the Central Illinois Chapter of SCORE. SCORE is a consulting arm of the U. S. Small Business Administration which counsels with start-ups, emerging and ongoing businesses.

Student Accomplishments

 

  • Jenna Marsh, senior marketing major, was recognized by Chicago-based Chicago Office Technology Group (COTG) as the top intern in the organization’s Summer Sales Internship Program. COTG is a long-standing, Platinum Level Corporate Partner with ISU’s Professional Sales Institute and provides sales internships for a large number of students each year, making Jenna’s achievements even more notable. Among the numerous Top Level Performer Awards Jenna received at COTG are:

    • 1st Place Internship Program Winner
    • Top 3-Performer for 5 out of 8 weeks
    • Highest number of total appointments in 1 week
    • Won Weekly Sales Incentive for weeks 4 and 8
    • 4th highest revenue produced at $29,507
    • Closed only deal of the Program for $14,507
    • Exceeded percent of plan for dials in 2 out of 8 weeks
    • Exceeded percent of plan for appointments in 4 out of 8 weeks
    • 1st Place Award for number of appointments: 32
    • 2nd Place Award for number of print studies: 7
    • 5th Place Award for total number of dials: 1,009
    • Averaged 4.875 appointments per week: 121% of plan

    Gamma Iota Sigma Wins National Awards

    The Illinois State University chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma won four national awards based on effective and creative programs that enhance the experience of its members. The following programs earned awards honors:

    • Insurance Applications for Sixth Graders
    • Real Work Explanation of Corporate Benefits
    • Katie Leadership Program

    The ISU chapter was also distinguished as the “Best Kept Secret” – an award given for growing membership base and increasing schedule of professional involvement. The officers that attended the meeting were AJ Rector, President, Thomas Daly, Vice President of Internal Affairs, Bill Jones, Vice President of Student Relations, Amber Armand, Treasurer, Lauren Leggett, Secretary, Craig Hawes, Fundraising, Javier Zavala, Publicity, and Jon Perry, Recruiting.
