Sandy Colbs is Director, Student Counseling Services at Illinois State University. Please take a moment to read her message.
As the semester gets underway I wanted to remind faculty and staff of the services of Student Counseling Services and to share a bit with you about our protocol for response to critical incidents on or off campus.
We rely a great deal on "front line" people such as advisors, faculty, etc. to help us identify students at risk and we want to partner with you in reaching out to these students effectively. Please read our Faculty/Staff Guide on our web page at www.counseling.ilstu.edu/faculty_staff/ for information about how to recognize and refer students in need of assistance. Print copies of this material are also available as well as workshops for groups of faculty/staff. We are also available to brainstorm specific situations with you. Our counselors are happy to talk to any faculty or staff person about concerns related to a specific student, how to get that student help, etc. Each situation is unique, so rather than provide a "cookbook" approach, we want to partner with you in meeting the individual needs of our students. Call us at 438-3655 and ask for the "counselor on call" to discuss your specific circumstance.
We are also available to assist faculty and staff in accessing mental health services. We can meet with faculty and staff for a single session to discuss your needs and to facilitate a referral to the Employee Assistance Program or to a private or community based provider or agency. Faculty and staff can also contact the Employee Assistance Program directly at (866) 659-3848 or through Nikki Brauer in Human Resources at 438-8311.
When a critical incident (student death, student injury, suicide, natural disaster, fire, etc.) takes place, we, in conjunction with the Student Affairs Critical Incident Response Team, try to determine who the various circles of affected persons are, and we make special outreach to those groups. We welcome your help in identifying these subgroups so that our outreach efforts can be most effective, as well as your help in referring individual students to us for assistance.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or need additional information.

FIL Senior Transition
Linda Miles (FIL) and Joe Trefzger (FIL) have initiated a FIL Senior Transition Session to help our soon-to-be graduated seniors make the transition from student to contributing employee. Human Resources and Career Services professionals, as well as recently employed former FIL students, will offer their perspectives on the job search process early in the fall semester. This is a brand new effort and good example of mentoring students prior to graduation to help them achieve their career goals.
