Faculty Accomplishments

  • “A Focus on Integrity,” by Martin Biegelman of Microsoft Corporation, Linda Leinicke (ACC), Joyce Ostrosky (ACC) and W. Max Rexroad (Emeritus Professor of Accounting) was published in the August 2007 issue of Internal Auditor, pp. 79-83.
  • George Flannigan (FIL) conducted presentations for Allstate and Zurich this summer. In addition, his article “Duty to Defend After Exhaustion of Limits: The CGL and the Role of Lloyd’s Before 1966”, was published in the John Liner Review.
  • Yu-Luen Ma (FIL) and Elango Balasubramanian (MQM) teamed to write "Why Do International Operations Lead to Improved Performance? An Analysis of Property-Liability Insurers", which is set for publication in the forthcoming issue of Risk Management and Insurance Review.
  • Richard MacMinn (FIL) helped organize and host the Third Longevity Risk and Capital Market Solutions Symposium in Taipei in July During the same month he was invited by the Insurance Institute for Asia and the Pacific in Manila to give a speech on Catastrophe Risk Management.  MacMinn won an award at the Quebec City ARIA Meeting for nine years of service as editor of the Journal of Risk and Insurance. MacMinn was named a visiting editor for a special issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Risk and Insurance on longevity risk in July.
  • A Primer for Management, 2nd Edition, by Mike Dumler (MQM) and Steven Skinner of the University of Kentucky was just released. A PRIMER FOR MANAGEMENT, 2E is a concise introduction to the roles and responsibilities of management. Its brief format provides maximum instruction flexibility, including: cases, suggested reading from the Harvard Business Review, and videos. You decide how best to enrich your curriculum--either by blending in your own material or by selecting from among the many supplemental offerings from Thomson South-Western.   • This summer Nat Pope (FIL) and Yu-Luen Ma (FIL) presented their paper, "Foreign Ownership and Non-Life Insurer Efficiency in the Japanese Marketplace" at the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association in Taipei, Taiwan and at the American Risk and Insurance Association in Quebec City, Canada.
  • Carson Varner (FIL) was appointed as a member of the Board of Trustees of COUNTRY Mutual Funds Trust.  He presented a paper “Developments in the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993.” at the MBAA – International in March.
  • Kathy Mountjoy defended her dissertation "Perceptions of Business Educators Concerning Change and Adaptation in Business Teacher Education Programs at Two Midwestern Universities" and received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration & Foundations in May from ISU.  Kathy is an Assistant Professor in the Marketing Department in the Business Teacher Education program.
  • Doug Micklich (MQM) presented a paper entitled "Determining Thinking Style: A Look at What Determines a Degree of Consistency in the Thinking Process’ at The Academy of Management's Meeting, August 3 - 8th in Philadelphia, PA.
  • Mathew Sheep (MQM) was a recipient of the Academy of Management's Outstanding Publication in Organizational Behavior Award for "Where is the "me" among the "we"? Identity work and the search for optimal balance" in Academy of Management Journal". The paper was co-authored with Glen Kreiner (Pennsylvania State University) and Elaine Hollensbe (University of Cincinnati).  The award, given annually by the OB Division at the Academy of Management, recognizes the publication that makes the most significant contribution to the advancement of the field of Organizational Behavior.

    • Kreiner, G. E., Hollensbe, E. C., & Sheep, M. L. 2006.  The multi-role individual: Boundary maintenance and individual differences across roles.  Paper presented at the 2007 Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) Conference, New York.
  • Steve Taylor (MKT) will be recognized as the 2007 Best Reviewer for the Journal of Service Research, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Service, Robert H. Smith School of Business at University of Maryland.  The award will be presented at the 2007 Frontiers in Service Conference in San Francisco in October.  JSR ranks as 13th among all business journals with an impact factor for 2006 of 1.722 - well ahead of other prestigious publication outlets such as Harvard Business Review, the International Journal of Service Industry Management and Service Industries Journal
    • An article by Taylor titled “The addition of anticipated regret to attitudinally based, goal-directed models of information search behaviours under conditions of uncertainty and risk” will appear in the British Journal of Social Psychology in late 2007 or early 2008.
  • Nat Pope (FIL) and Jim Jones, Director of the Katie School, received the Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Risk and Insurance Association, Quebec City, Canada, August 8, 2007.  Pope and Jones coordinate a summer risk management camp for high school students - the Redbird Risk Management Challenge. The camp brings some of the top high school talent from around the Midwest, and even from other corners of the nation, to our campus for a weeklong summer camp where teams compete against one another to win a competition demonstrating mastery of risk management and insurance concepts. The program is presently moving into its fourth year of existence and is sponsored on campus by the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services and the College of Business.
  • Karen Hosack ((FIL) and Katrin Varner (FIL) co-authored the paper, “Employee Freedom of Speech:  Can an Employer Terminate an Employee for Expressing a Political Opinion?” which was presented at the Annual Conference for the Academy of Legal Studies in Business in Indianapolis in August.
  • Yayuan Ren (FIL) presented " Measuring Risk Management Performance of Insurers: a DEA Approach" at the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) annual conference in August at Quebec City, Canada.
  • A paper by Han Kang (FIL) “Investment Returns and the Insurance Price Cycle: Industry vs. Stock,” was published in the International Journal of Business, Accounting and Finance (IJBAF), Vol. 1, No. 1 (Summer, 2007), pp. 86 – 94.
  • Keith Jones (ACC) has three publications to report:
    • “Students’ Major Selections in Changing Economic Times”, forthcoming at New Accountant.  Coauthors: Clement Chen and David McIntyre.   
    • “Budgeting:  Can’t We Do Better Than This?”,  New Accountant, Issue 720, 2007.  Coauthor: Clement Chen.
    • Jones and Jay Rich (ACC) co-authored “Does Your Performance Evaluation System Need an Overhaul?”,  forthcoming at The CPA Journal  along with Tom Clausen.

Jones was selected by Big 4 accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) to attend PWC University in July. PWC University is a week long program that includes a combination of experiential and technical learning programs that are identical to the program provided to new PWC partners. 

 

  • Jay Rich (ACC) presented a two-week class in Germany as part of the COB faculty exchange program and was also invited to teach a section at a new employee training seminar at KPMG.

Student Recognitions

  • Student Accomplishments - Audrey KarrickIt was announced at the National Beta Alpha Psi meeting August 3-4 in Chicago that accounting student Audrey Karrick was the recipient of the 2007 National AWSCPA (American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants) Scholarship.  In addition to scholastic requirements, the award was based on an essay submitted by Audrey.  Audrey's essay was selected as the most outstanding essay of the scholarship competition.
