A message from the Dean

We had good attendance, with 45 colleagues participating. Speaking on behalf of the Constituent Satisfaction Team, Linda Showers began the meeting by encouraging everyone to participate in our newest tradition, a lunch and party in the courtyard for our graduating seniors and their families.  The date is Friday, May 11th, from 11:30 until 1:30.  Please do come and help us send off our new alumni with good wishes.

Associate Dean Jim Moon and I talked about some important issues related to accreditation and continuous improvement.  I covered the timeline to our next maintenance visit, which will be in the 2011-2012 academic year.  We need to be vigilant about our AQ/PQ criteria and status, because many schools are deferred for not meeting the Faculty Qualifications standard. Jim reviewed the progress we have made on assurance of learning, with a focus on the process and results of the ETS major field test we piloted this year for assessment of the core.  After reviewing the results and lessons learned, the Leadership Team decided to implement the testing of all graduating seniors next spring. The faculty members teaching our MQM 385 and 485 courses have enthusiastically agreed to integrate this expectation into their classes.

Associate Dean S.J. Chang and Dan Goebel, leader of the HRD Team, reviewed our progress on integrating the Standards of Professional Behavior and Ethical Conduct into the life of the college.  We have done well but there is more do to. Dan discussed information received from faculty about the standards and their class expectations.  The HRD Team will continue working on this.

Iris Varner provided an excellent overview of the many international opportunities available for students and faculty.  She provided a feedback form for faculty to use to express interest in these opportunities, and also sent a follow-up e-mail to all faculty the next week. Please return the form or talk with Iris if you are interested.

Finally, Associate Dean Chang and Doug Love, leader of the Curriculum Team, talked about the ethics curriculum review and the progress made since the fall retreat. Emphasis on the implementation and assessment of these curricular revisions will continue.

All the presentations will be filed on the U Drive in the \COB\Faculty Meeting April.

So as usual, it was a busy and productive year.  As colleagues, we must remain focused on our college mission and goals, and of course keep that AACSB timeline as a part each year’s discussions. And we should express appreciation to our team leaders and members, as well as the college leadership, for the work they have done.

For one last time, I extend my personal thanks to all of you who care so much about our students and colleagues, and who contribute so generously to the college and the university.  I hope you will continue to believe in the positive culture we have created in the College of Business, and will work together in the future in the same constructive fashion that has allowed us to make such great strides.  It has been a privilege to lead the college over the past decade, and I will miss being a part of its daily life.  But I will be following your progress and accomplishments with great interest and affection, and hope you will keep in touch.

With heartfelt thanks and good wishes,

Dixie
