Industry visitors have been highly active on campus this fall interacting with accounting students and faculty. On September 18, Beta Alpha Psi hosted its first “Big Four” Accounting Firms Panel Discussion with PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, and Ernst & Young in attendance. For the first hour of the event, each of the firms discussed a current issue in accounting. One of the topics explored was forensic accounting. A question and answer session that followed the individual firm presentations allowed students to pose questions to the industry experts. After the formal event, students, faculty, and the firms went to the lower level Atrium for a social networking opportunity hosted by the Accounting Department and Beta Alpha Psi. " This event was a great opportunity for students considering a career in public accounting - especially with a Big Four firm," said Gerry McKean. "The event occurred the evening before the Career Fair, giving students an opportunity to pursue internship or fulltime employment possibilities with the Big Four. Debbie Lindberg, the Faculty Advisor to Beta Alpha Psi, noted that the officers of Beta Alpha Psi did a great job in connecting students, the representatives of the Big Four firms, and faculty.
More outstanding opportunities were available on Thursday, September 21 through a career event hosted by the Business Information Systems (BIS) Club. The organization sponsored guest speakers from State Farm, Microsoft, and also heard from two students who recently completed BIS Internships at Caterpillar and State Farm. Presentation topics included BIS career paths, keys to success, lessons learned, and the vast opportunities and promising outlook for BIS majors. The event concluded with a full panel Q&A session. Afree raffle was held for all attendees with winners receiving gifts generously donated by the Microsoft Corporation. A reception was held in the lower atrium of the COB Building prior to the event to allow social networking opportunities between BIS students, faculty and the speakers.
"The speakers were dynamic and insightful. The food was outstanding. And the raffle was generous and far reaching. An enjoyable and great time was had by all!" said Gerry McKean. The event presented an outstanding opportunity for students considering BIS related careers and complimented numerous other career related activities taking place around campus during the same week. Matt Nelson and Rosie Hauck are the faculty advisors for the BIS Club.
