Faculty Accomplishments

  • Nat Pope (FIL) published “The Value of a Life in the 21st Century” in the Journal of Financial Service Professionals in May. He presented two papers and was the invited feature speaker at the Institute of Economic Research’s (Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan) International Workshop on Insurance. The papers were “The Impact of Foreign Shareholding on Efficiency in the Japanese Non-Life Insurance Market” and "Market Deregulation and Insurer Pricing Strategies: The Japanese Experience."
  • Yu-Luen Ma (FIL) and Nat Pope (FIL) presented a paper at the Asian-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association annual conference in Tokyo in titled “The Market Structure - Performance Relationship in the International Insurance Sector.“
  • The 6th edition of the investment textbook by Edgar Norton (FIL) and Frank Reilly of University of Notre Dame is now available in Chinese. The publisher, Thomson South-western, is introducing the book to the mainland China market.
  • Iris Varner (MQM) was appointed an adjunct professor at Shanghai University. She was a keynote speaker at an international symposium and gave several lectures at Shanghai University and East China University of Technology.
  • Dan Goebel (MKT), Greg Marshall, and William B. Locander published “Getting One’s Own Way: An Investigation of Influence Attempts by Marketers on Non-marketing Members of The Firm,” Journal of Business Research, in July.
  • Karen Hosack (FIL) and Katrin Varner (FIL) presented a paper at the Academy of Legal Studies in Business Annual Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida entitled “Dear Blog: I Got Fired Today…:Can An Employee’s Non-Work-Related Blogging Result In Termination Of Employment.”
  • John Bantham (MQM) presented “Extending the Marriage Metaphor:  The Importance of Partner Communication Behavior in Understanding Buyer-Seller Relationships” at the Consumer Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction and Complaining Behavior Conference, June 7-10, 2006, Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. Co-presenters were Kevin G. Celuch, University of Southern Indiana, and Chickery J. Kasoof, Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Bantham, Celuch and Kasoof also collaborated on “An Extension of the Marriage Metaphor in Buyer-Seller Relationships:  An Exploration of Individual Level Process Dynamics” published in the Journal of Business Research, Volume 59, Issue 5, May 2006.
  • Mike Humphreys (MKT) presented “Buyer Evaluation of the Selling Encounter and its Effect on Buyer Trust Perceptions and Organizational Buyer-Supplier Relationship Development" at the Consumer Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction and Complaining Behavior Conference.
  • Den Patten (ACC) presented the paper “The Role of (Certain) Environmental Disclosures as Tools of Legitimacy” at the American Accounting Association Conference in Washington DC in August. It was co-authored with Charles Cho of the University of Central Florida.
  • Rosie Hauck (MQM) and Matt Nelson (MQM) presented “Embedding student clickers in an introductory management information systems course” at Midwest United States Association for Information Systems in Grand Rapids in May. The paper received the 2006 Midwest AIS Conference Best Paper Award.
  • John Wiley and Sons, publisher of Finance: An Introduction to Institutions, Investments, and Management by Ron Melicher and Edgar Norton (FIL) is coming out with a new version of this text. The first edition of the new text, entitled Finance: Foundations of Financial Institutions and Management, is a basic introduction to business finance and the importance of financial markets to businesses. The original "Finance" text, which is a survey of financial institutions, investments, and business finance concepts, is on track to be published in its 13th edition in 2008. Melicher is department chair of the Finance Department at University of Colorado-Boulder.
  • Richard MacMinn (FIL) and L. M. Han authored "Stock Options and the Corporate Demand for Insurance” in the Journal of Risk & Insurance 73(2): 231-260. MacMinn also gave the following presentations:
    • "Longevity Risk, Capital Markets and Financial Engineering," Ulm University, Ulm, Germany, June 21st, 2006
    • “Genetic Testing and Life Insurance,” Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany, June 25th, 2006

Professional Sales Institute Names Associate Directors

In recognition of the growth of the sales program, three new associate directors have been named for the Professional Sales Institute, a self-supporting program within in the College of Business.

     Jill Attaway, Associate Director - Communication & Corporate Relations
  • Coordinates general communication with PSI partners and relevant groups of businesses, students, and alumni to promote and build awareness of program activities
  • Develops content and oversees advertising sales for SOLD! Magazine published once each fall and spring semester
  • Organizes Career Fairs and other recruiting efforts targeting one major activity each fall and spring semester
     Dan Goebel, Associate Director - Research
  • Establishes research priorities & funding priorities for sales research
  • Oversees and coordinate faculty research based on established priorities
  • Explores and acquire research grants and funding opportunities
  • Builds corporate involvement with Sales Institute research activities

Mike Humphreys, Associate Director - Education & Outreach

  • Coordinates speaker programs and special events including in-class guest instructors & speakers
  • Manages the Sales Student Scholar Program and other awards and recognitions
  • Oversees sales competition efforts at the regional and national levels
  • Promotes executive education and development efforts

 

Student Accomplishments

  • Illinois State University chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has received its fifth consecutive Superior Merit Award. Jim Jawahar (MQM) is the group’s faculty sponsor. The organization promotes interaction between students and practitioners and supplements classroom education with real-world knowledge and hands-on experience.  Just a small percentage of the 400 student chapters nationwide earned this distinction.
  • The student team of Valerie Bestler, Tina Frank, and Terri Cluskey represented ISU at the North Central Human Resource Competition held in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Twenty-eight teams from the North Central Region of US participated in the competition in which ISU finished 7th, just seven points behind the 3rd place finisher.
  • The Illinois State Student Chapter of the American Marketing Association received national awards for excellence in Communication and Community Service for 2006.
  • During the past year, the MBA Association raised more than $2,200 to fight cancer and was recognized by the American Cancer Society as Bronze Club contributors for 2006 Relay for Life.
  • Business majors Laura E. Meade and Timothy J. Pantaleone were two of fourteen students named 2006 - 2007 Bone Scholars. Laura is from Canton and is majoring in Finance and Economics. Timothy is from Normal and is also majoring in Finance. The Bone Scholarship is the highest university-wide honor given to undergraduate students. Honorees are selected for their scholarly achievements and leadership in activities in the university community and beyond. Since 1990, 22% of the Bone Scholars have been business majors.
  • Two Illinois State University graduates were recognized as EXCEL Award recipients by the Illinois CPA Society for their outstanding performance on the 2005 CPA exam. The Excel Award is given to Illinois candidates who passed all sections of the CPA exam within two consecutive windows, attained a total average score of 90% or higher and were among the top 5% of scores in 2005. Joe Lee ’05 received the ICPAS Silver Excel Award by earning the second highest exam score in the state. Andrew Hoffman ’05 was one of nine EXCEL recipients in Illinois. Both Lee and Hoffman are employed by McGladrey & Pullen and extremely pleased with their College of Business experiences.
  • Brett Schnepper took the oath of office as the new student trustee at Illinois State.  Schnepper, a Champaign senior majoring in business administration and political science, was a member of the Student Government Association at Illinois State.
  • Finance intern, Matthew Weber, earned 3rd place in State Farm's intern speech contest this summer.
  • The Professional Sales Institute’s Sales Student Scholar Program is a combined recognition and learning program. Candidates compete for acceptance in their junior year and work on a variety of applied projects during their senior year to enrich their classroom experiences. Each student chosen receives a $1,000 scholarship and 4 credit hours toward graduation requirements for the hands-on work they produce. Sales Scholars for the 2006-2007 are Lauren Caudell, Ashley Derycke, Jonathan Lohman, Danica Nelson, Steve O’Connor, Michael Poon, Lauren Prystawsky, Matt Shambo, Kevin Swartz, Janae Volm, Ryan Wilkinson and Emily Wolf.
  • Bill Gugerty from the Student Accounting Society was chosen as the recipient of the Connie Krug Student Recognition Award.
  • Ryan Brown, a Bone Scholar and senior Finance major, was selected as the first recipient of the Jack North Student Leadership Award.
  • Chelsey Redmond received the outstanding senior in Finance award this year. She also received the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key which is awarded to the graduating honors student with the highest cumulative GPA. Chelsey was the student speaker at commencement ceremonies in May.
  • Kevin Conner was awarded the outstanding senior in Insurance.
  • Brett Schaefer received the outstanding undergraduate student award from the Accounting Department.
  • Andria Moore earned the outstanding master of science in accountancy award.
  • Gregory Fiedler earned the outstanding master of professional accountancy award.
  • David E. Starr received the outstanding senior in Business Teacher Education award.
  • Lyndy R. Wickline received the outstanding senior in Marketing award.
  • Brittany McTaggart received the outstanding senior in Entrepreneurship award.
  • Ashley Warbalow received the outstanding senior in Management award.
  • Deanna Fedaj received the outstanding senior in Organizational Leadership award.
  • Tina Frank received the outstanding senior in Human Resource award.
  • Melissa Theobald and Matthew Korstick received the award for outstanding senior in Business Administration.
  • Molly Hesterman received the award for outstanding senior in International Business.
