Student Accomplishments

Joe Trefzger (FIL) is pleased to report that junior Dennis Nowaczyk received one of two major scholarships recently awarded by the Financial Executives Institute (FEI). This prestigious professional organization is comprised of members are all Chief Financial Officers or other top financial managers.  These individuals oversee the major finance and accounting functions for their companies.  Each year the Chicago FEI chapter invites many universities in the surrounding region to nominate students for scholarships, which are awarded on a competitive basis.  Important parts of the competitive process are writing an essay and being interviewed by FEI members at a special meeting.  The interview questions range from academic topics to current business events to career plans.

Dennis, who is double-majoring in Finance and Accounting, was thrilled to receive the $5000 award. He is in the honors program, and has gained work experience in financial and accounting applications during recent summers.  Because of his double-major in the two fields of interest to FEI members, along with his stellar academic performance, practical knowledge, and outstanding character, the FIL department saw Dennis as an excellent choice to be the ISU nominee.  He clearly made a great impression on some of the Midwest’s top financial managers, and came out ahead of other outstanding students from many fine schools. According to Trefzger, beyond the immediate financial benefits, an award of this type helps to lay a foundation for career success.  It builds confidence, marks the recipient as a leader among his or her peers, and helps the recipient to be known by, and network with, influential people.

According to Nowaczyk, Dr. Trefzger recommended him for the FEI award.  Bill Scott aided in the application process, giving Dennis advice on how to structure my essay for the application and some tips on the interview process.

“This scholarship opened my eyes to a new world of top financial professionals. I gained insight into the type of commitment necessary to reach the level of FEI members. The scholarship award gave me a greater confidence in my abilities and helped focus my goals.  I received immense support of my career ambitions and the FEI members generously pointed me towards networking possibilities,” said Nowaczyk.
