    Burns joined COUNTRY Financial in August 2005 as Portfolio Manager. His current area of responsibility includes all areas within the fixed income market for various insurance company and total return portfolios. He was a corporate bond specialist for Caterpillar Investment Management Ltd.from May 2000 until August 2005. Before joining Caterpillar, Burns was vice president of fixed income securities at Principal Capital Management of Des Moines, Iowa where he monitored a $1.3 billion corporate bond portfolio, which included privately placed and publicly traded debt securities, and specialized in the grocery retail/wholesale, department store, textile, and leisure industries. Burns earlier analyzed the credit quality of banks as an assistant bank examiner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

    Burns earned the B.S. in finance in 1990 and an M.B.A. in 1994 from Illinois State University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst® and holds series 7 and 63 securities licenses.

    Deneen received his B.S. in finance in 1982 from Illinois State University and his CFP designation in 1987. An investment consultant since 1982, he is a senior vice president and the branch manager for Wachovia Securities Inc. in Bloomington. Deneen, his wife and three children reside in Bloomington, Illinois.

    Haggerty is a portfolio manager and senior analyst at Duff & Phelps Investment Management where he leads a team responsible for analyzing and investing in publicly traded international real estate and lodging companies. He is a member of the Duff & Phelps global real estate securities team, which manages in excess of $2 billion across a range of mutual funds and institutional separate accounts. 

    Prior to joining Duff & Phelps in 2005, Haggerty was a senior analyst and portfolio manager at ABN AMRO Asset Management for seven years.  At ABN AMRO, he was a member of the North American real estate securities team and was responsible for analyzing the residential, office, lodging, and health care property sectors.  Additionally, Haggerty was the portfolio manager for the North American region of the ABN AMRO High Income Property Fund (Netherlands based mutual fund) and several offshore separate accounts that utilized a similar investment strategy.

    Haggerty holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Illinois State University and a M.B.A., with distinction from DePaul University.  He is a member of the CFA Society of Chicago, the CFA Institute and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.

     

    MICHELLE HERMANN

    Michelle Hermann is currently the Wealth Management Business Development and Marketing Officer for Park National Bank.  Park National Bank is a $4.0 billion bank with over 30 locations in the Chicago area.

    Michelle began her career at Boulevard Bank as a Financial Management Associate.  She was later promoted to Trust Officer and then to Assistant Vice President and Custody Division Manager.  She then worked for Great Lakes Trust Company as President of the Trust Bank created within the First National Bank of Blue Island.  Michelle holds a B.S. degree from Illinois State University and a MBA in Finance from Loyola University of Chicago.  She is Treasurer of the South Suburban Estate Planning Council and a Board Member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council. 

     

    NATHAN JACOBS

    Nathan Jacobs received his B.S. in finance in 2001 from Illinois State University, and his M.B.A. in 2007 from DePaul University’s Kellstadt School of Business.  Jacobs is the Sr. Research Analyst at Coe Capital Management, a Chicago-area investment firm that caters to high net worth clients and institutional clientele.  Jacobs is also responsible for providing investment ideas for the Intrinsic family of hedge funds.  He is an alumnus of the EIF program, and is series 7 and 66 licensed.

     

    David L. Mistic DAVID L. MISTIC

     

    Mistic was a vice president and relationship manager at Harris Nesbitt, a Chicago-based provider of investment banking and corporate banking services to midsized public and private companies. Prior to joining Harris Nesbitt in 1998, he was employed by First National Bank of Chicago as a staff accountant and also by a First Chicago subisidiary, American National Bank, where he completed a formal credit-training program.

    Mistic graduated from Illinois State University in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in finance. He is an alumnus of the EIF program.

     

     

    EDGAR NORTON, CFA®

    Dr. Norton joined the Illinois State faculty in 1997. His research and teaching interests include the areas of investments, financial planning, and small business. A holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst ® designation since 1988, he regularly has been awarded certificates of achievement signifying continuous development in the field of investments. He served as a curriculum consultant for the Chartered Financial Analyst® equity specialization program and the Candidate Curriculum Working Body. He currently serves on the Council of Examiners of the CFA Institute and has participated as an exam grader and team leader for the CFA Examination grading process.

    He is completing a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the Financial Planning Association of Illinois on which he served as Director for Career Development.

    Dr. Norton has coauthored four textbooks, including Investments (Thomson-South-western) and Finance (John Wiley and Sons). He is past President of the Midwest Finance Association and a former board member of the Financial Planning Association fo Illinois. The author of more than 30 papers published in journals and conference proceedings, his research has appeared in venues such as Financial Review, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Small Business Finance, Journal of Business Research, Small Business Economics, and Journal of Small Business Management.

    Dr. Norton received two B.S. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

    NANCY PHILIPSEN

    Nancy Philipsen received her B.A. with distinction from Pennsylvania State University and her M.B.A. with highest distinction from Illinois State University. She majored in Finance, insurance, and Law at ISU, where she also received the Outstanding MBA Student of the Year Award. She holds the CPCU designation and is a member of the National Association of Industrial Properties. Nancy has served on the EIF Board of Directors since 1997 and also sits on the Finance Advisory Board of Illinois State University. At State Farm, Nancy is the Regional Manager for the $4 billion commercial loan portfolio for the 32 northeast, southeast, north central states, and invests several hundred million annually. She enjoys public speaking and has been a member of Toastmasters International since 1985. She enjoys bridge and traveling with her husband.

    Secord is the Practice leader for development and implementation of investment and financial planning services for the downstate Illinois offices of Clifton Gunderson. His clients include high net worth individuals and owners of small and medium-sized businesses.  After starting as an account executive with Merrill Lynch over thirty years ago, Secord's career has included tenure with his own asset management firm, Merrill Lynch, Drexel Burnham Lambert, Integrated Resources, First Busey Securities and New England Financial. 

    Secord has earned both the BS in Business Administration (1971) and the MS in Business Administration (1973) from Illinois State University, and holds the Certified Financial Planner designation.

    Jennifer Swearingen is a senior secondary marketing analyst at State Farm.  She is involved with interest rate risk management and the profitable delivery of residential properties to the secondary mortgage market.  Prior to this, she was a quantitative analyst in the State Farm Bank Treasury Department.  She has also worked in international finance and manufacturing.

    Jennifer holds dual bachelor’s degrees in finance and insurance from Illinois State University, a master’s degree in communications (marketing concentration) from Northwestern University, and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She is a Chartered Financial Consultant and is currently studying for the CFA examination.  She is an alumnus of the EIF program.

    Doug Throneburg is a Vice President and Private Client Advisor of First American Bank.  His duties include developing comprehensive financial planning solutions for the bank’s high net worth clients and overall relationship management duties.  Prior to joining First American Bank, Doug worked as a financial planner within a small CPA firm catering to high net worth families.

    Doug is an adjunct faculty member of Keller Graduate School of Management teaching courses in Personal Financial Planning, Securities Analysis, and Financial Management.  He received his B.S. degree in finance from Illinois State University in 1994 and his Master’s degree in business administration from North Central College in 2002.  He is a Certified Financial Planner and an Illinois licensed Certified Public Accountant.  He is an alumnus of the EIF course.

    Michael C. Towler is a Senior Portfolio Manager and Senior Investment Officer in  Wealth Advisory Services.  He has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry including portfolio management, investment research and commercial banking. As a Senior Portfolio Manager, he is responsible for the overall  investment management, including asset allocation, investment selection and implementation, for Northern’s high net worth clients. As a Senior Investment Officer, Michael supervises a team of investment professionals and associates who also manage client portfolios.

    Michael joined Northern Trust in May, 1991 and was named Senior Vice President in November, 2002. He was a voting member of Northern’s Investment Policy Committee from 2003 thru 2007. He is a CFA charter holder and member of the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago and the Association for Investment Management and Research.  He serves on the board of Illinois State University’s Educational Investment Fund.

    Previously, he was associated with National Australia Bank as a commercial banker and CNA Insurance Co. as a real estate analyst. He  received a B.S. degree from Illinois State University and an M.B.A. from DePaul University.

    Vaughn began his career with Edward Jones in 2006 as an analyst in the Equity Research department following the health care industry. Prior to joining Edward Jones, Vaughn worked at Robert W. Baird & Company as an equity research analyst covering the utilities industry. In this role, he covered domestic electric and natural gas companies. From 1997 to 2001, Vaughn worked for State Farm Insurance Group as a financial analyst in the planning and analysis unit. Vaughn graduated from the Illinois State University in 1995 with dual bachelor’s degrees in finance and business administration and a minor in accounting; he earned his master’s degree in business administration in 2003 from Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. In addition, Vaughn is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the CFA Society of Chicago.

    White graduated from Illinois State University in 1992. He is an alumnus of EIF. He holds the CFA® designation and has completed his M.B.A. at Northwestern University in spring 2001. Married to Martha, he likes golf and downhill skiing.
